Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity
One-Year Lectionary
About this service
Jesus Is Our Good Samaritan
The Law cannot help us or give us life. Rather, it confines everyone under sin as wounded and naked before God (Gal. 3:15–22). So it is that two figures of the Law, the priest and the Levite, passed by the injured man on the side of the road (Luke 10:23–37). Only the promised Seed of Abraham can rescue us and make us righteous before God. Only the Samaritan, our Lord Jesus, had compassion, as did the Samaritans of old (2 Chronicles 28:8–15). He came down to us in our lost and dying condition, pouring on the oil and wine of the Sacraments. He placed us on His own animal, bearing our sin and brokenness in His body on the cross to restore us. Jesus brought us to the inn, that is, the Church, and gave the innkeeper two denarii, that His double forgiveness might continue to be ministered to us. In this way the Lord, by whose Law we are torn and stricken, heals us and revives us by His Gospel and raises us up with Himself.

Collect
Historical Collect — Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity
ALMIGHTY and Everlasting God, give unto us the increase of faith, hope, and charity; and that we may obtain that which Thou dost promise, make us to love that which Thou dost command; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for August 30, 2026 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Heavenly Father, Your Son has triumphed by His cross. Give grace to Your Church to proclaim His victory throughout the world — the victory of the love that hate could not destroy, and the life that death could not overcome. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
O God, You gave the old covenant through angels to train Israel in Your Law. Bless the ministers of Your new covenant to proclaim forgiveness, life and salvation to all nations in the stead and by the command of Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord, enable every Christian to learn Your Word and teach the faith to family and children. Give them boldness to speak the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all those within their acquaintance and care. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
O Lord and King, You appoint our earthly rulers to urge the good and punish the wicked. Grant both justice and restraint in their punishments, that goodness and grace may be established in our land. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Father, into Your loving hands we commend those who have requested our intercession [especially _____________]. Lead them out of all their troubles. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord of hosts, You have instituted and given Your Sacrament for the faithful to receive the very body and blood of Your Son for their forgiveness, life and salvation. Grant us all pure hearts to receive this gift worthily. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord of all living, receive our thanksgiving for Your saints who now see You face to face [especially _____________]. Bless us with faith like theirs to hear Your proclamation now and persevere until we also stand with them before Your face. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank You that You have granted us to live in this accepted time when we may hear Your holy Gospel, know Your fatherly will and behold Your Son, Jesus Christ! We implore You, most merciful Father, let the light of Your Word remain with us and so govern our hearts by Your Holy Spirit that we may never forsake Your Word, but remain steadfast in it and, finally, obtain eternal salvation; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the same Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
