About this service
Jesus Calls Sinners to Repentance and Newness of Life in Accordance with His Mercy
In calling Matthew the tax collector to follow Him, Jesus demonstrates that He has come “not to call the righteous, but sinners” (Matt. 9:9, 13). As a good physician, He comes not to confirm them in their sins, but to heal them with His grace, calling them to repentance, faith and newness of life (Matt. 9:12). He puts them to death by the preaching of His Law, in order to raise them with His Gospel, to live before Him in the righteousness of His resurrection (Hos. 6:1–2, 5). It is in this way that God “gives life to the dead,” that is, through faith in Jesus, “who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification” (Rom. 4:17, 24–25). Thus, sinners from all nations are called to share the same faith as Abraham, the father of all who trust in Jesus (Rom. 4:16–18). And as our Lord in mercy thus welcomes us poor sinners to recline at the table in His house, so does He “desire steadfast love and not sacrifice” (Matt. 9:10, 13; Hos. 6:6), that we should have mercy on our neighbors and forgive their sins against us for Jesus’ sake.

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for June 7, 2026 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
O Lord, You strike down and You heal. Though we justly deserve Your wrath for our sin, revive us and raise us up, that we may live before You forever. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Gracious God, Your Son called Matthew from his tax booth to be an apostle who proclaimed salvation. Continue to call men into Your Holy Ministry, and endow them with every good gift to proclaim Your Word and administer Your Sacraments in righteousness. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Father in heaven, by Your grace Abraham did not weaken in faith but trusted Your promises. Strengthen parents to persist in their callings and train their children in Your Word and ways. Defend them from discouragement and apathy, and convince them that You are able to do what You have promised. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Creator of all things, You call into existence what does not exist and govern it for good. Remember those You have given authority among the nations, that the laws they administer might reflect Your order and maintain peace. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Gracious Lord, You are the great Physician of both body and soul. Look with compassion on those who are suffering from illness [especially _____________]. If it be Your will, give them a full restoration to health and strength. In the midst of these difficulties, O Lord, keep them firm in their faith and trust, that they might never doubt Your presence and love for them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Righteous God, since Your Son was handed over for our trespasses and raised again for our justification, grant the forgiveness of sins to all who receive the Lord’s Supper this day. Lead us to hold firmly to Your promises, that the presence of Christ’s crucified and risen body may nourish and strengthen us in our faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Holy God, You desire mercy and not sacrifice. Preserve us from doing good only out of a grudging obligation. Grant us joyful hearts that serve our neighbor in love, in thankfulness for the good You have done for us in Jesus Christ. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Holy Father, receive our thanks for Your kindness to Abraham, Sarah and all the saints who have gone before us. Preserve us in faith and in righteousness, that we, too, may give You glory now and forever. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
We entrust all these petitions to Your care, loving Father, confident in Your great mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is worshiped together with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

For peace among the nations, that our Lord, who calls everything into existence and governs it for good, would guide those in authority to reflect His order and purpose in their work, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For those suffering from illness, [especially _____________,] that according to the compassion of our great Physician they might be restored to health and strength; and that they might remain firm in faith and trust in the midst of these difficulties, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For those who receive the Lord’s Supper this day, that they would hold firmly to the promises of their righteous Savior who was handed over for our trespasses and raised again for our justification; and that the presence of His crucified and risen body would forgive, nourish and strengthen their faith, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For a cheerful and willing spirit, that God would preserve us from a grudging heart and lead us joyfully to pursue good because of the good done for us in Christ, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
