Ash Wednesday
Three-Year Lectionary · Series B
About this service
Return to the Lord Your God, for He Has Reconciled You to Himself
On Ash Wednesday, we come down from the mountain with Jesus and set our faces toward His cross and Passion in Jerusalem. We make our pilgrimage with Him by the way of repentance, and thus we return to the dying and rising of Holy Baptism. Christ Jesus, “who knew no sin,” became our sin, so that by His death we are released from sin and in His resurrection we “become the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21). Since God has thus reconciled the world to Himself in Christ, “now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). He has provided the sacrificial Lamb, and He has left “a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering” in the Eucharist (Joel 2:14, 19). He summons us to return to Him with all our hearts, because He is “gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love” (Joel 2:13). Return to Him in faith and confidence, and so pray to Him as your Father; give to the needy from a heart of love; and fast for the sake of repentance (Matt. 6:3–4, 6, 17–18).

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for February 14, 2024 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your steadfast love. In Your abundant mercy, blot out our transgressions for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who was crucified for our sins and raised for our justification. Preserve the proclamation of His cross among us, and guard Your Church from every false teaching that might delight our desires but leave us lost in our iniquity. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Look graciously on Your Church, and preserve the Gospel among us. Renew us in this penitential season to strive against the desires of the flesh, to grow in the joy of Your salvation, and to look in love and service toward our neighbors, especially those of the household of faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Look graciously on the families of our congregation. Defend Your holy estate of marriage against every enemy that would divide. Strengthen parents for their duties, especially bringing up their children in the fear and instruction of the Lord, and preserve us all faithful to the end. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Remember in mercy all who bear office in our land. Give them wisdom, protect them from danger and help them serve our people according to Your gracious will. Help us to become a people that guards the rights of the weakest and most vulnerable, especially the unborn. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Behold in mercy all who are sick, who suffer and who rejoice. Be with all expectant mothers, all whose work is dangerous, the unemployed, those near death and those who mourn. Comfort us who are dust and must return to dust with the promise that a broken and contrite heart You will not despise. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Grant us repentance at the Lord’s table. Let us recognize the enormity of our sins by the measure of Your abundant pardon by the sacrifice of Christ, our Savior. Grant us faith to eat and drink His true body and blood worthily and to learn from Him to love our neighbor. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Bless us, heavenly Father, on this holy day of repentance. As we enter the season of Lent, let us hold fast to Your Word. Teach us to die to self and serve You faithfully throughout this mortal life, until at last You bring us with the blessed saints into Your presence forevermore; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayers of the Church for February 14, 2024 — Ektene Form
In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the proclamation of the cross among us, and for protection of the Church from every false doctrine that might delight our sinful desires but leave us lost in our iniquity, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For a salutary use of this season of penitence and renewal, that we may strive against the desires of the flesh, grow in the joy of Christ’s salvation, and look in love and service toward our neighbors, especially those of the household of faith, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the families of our congregation, that God would defend His holy estate of marriage against every enemy that would divide; that He would strengthen parents for their duties, especially bringing up their children in the fear and instruction of the Lord; and that all may be preserved faithful to the end, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For all who bear office in our land, that God would give them wisdom, protect them from danger and lead them to serve others according to His gracious will, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For our nation, that we may become a people that guards the rights of the weakest and most vulnerable among us, especially the unborn, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the sick, the suffering and those who rejoice, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For expectant mothers, those whose work is dangerous, the unemployed, those near death and those who mourn, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For us sinners who are dust and must return to dust, that we may firmly believe that God will not despise a broken and contrite heart, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For repentant hearts at the Lord’s table, that we may recognize the enormity of our sins by the measure of Christ’s abundant pardon through His atoning sacrifice, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For faith to eat and drink His true body and blood worthily and to learn from Him to love our neighbor, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
Bless us, Father, on this holy day of repentance.
