About this service
Jesus Has Defeated the Devil and Released Us from the Bondage of Sin and Death
The devil deceived us, enticing us to disregard and disobey the Word of God and driving us to hide “from the presence of the Lord God.” But the Lord, in His mercy, promised a Savior, who would set Himself against the devil on our behalf (Gen. 3:8–15). The Son of Man came, the incarnate Son of God, conceived and born of the woman. He “first binds the strong man,” Satan, by atoning for the sins of the world, thereby removing the condemnation of the Law and the fear of death (Mark 3:27). Now He plunders the devil’s house by calling all men to repent. Though He appears to be “out of his mind” (Mark 3:21), He fulfills the will of God and makes of us His own brothers and sisters. Therefore, “we do not lose heart,” despite the suffering, sin and death that we experience in this fallen world. “He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus.” By His grace, we are “being renewed day by day.” For the Gospel is daily bringing us into His presence, not for punishment, but for “an eternal weight of glory” (2 Cor. 4:14–17).

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for June 9, 2024 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Merciful God, You have sent the promised Offspring to crush Satan’s head forever by the death of Christ, our Savior. As You gave comfort to Adam and Eve, receiving their meager confessions for the sake of Your grace and promising deliverance from sin and its curse, so comfort us by the forgiveness of sins and give us hope in the promise of eternal life and Your new creation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Heavenly Father, Christ has made us His brothers by His incarnation and suffering for our sake, fellow heirs of Your undivided kingdom. Give boldness to those who preach, strength to those who work, generosity to those who give, and patience to those who suffer in Your Church, that we may always do the will of God and so be true and faithful members of the household of God. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Give courage to Your Church, O Lord, that as we believe, so we also would speak of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the confident hope we have in Him, that we, too, will be raised and brought into His presence. Embolden us by Your Spirit to confess this Christian faith from a lively conscience, that for Christ’s sake, grace may extend to more and more people and increase thanksgiving to Your glory. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Almighty God, no kingdom divided against itself can stand, and a house divided must fall. Graciously preserve our nation with its government. Frustrate the work of Satan and the seeds of destruction he would sow in every place were he not stayed by Your gracious hand. Unite our leaders and our people for the common good, while leading us to hope in that eternal kingdom which is not of this world. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Eternal Lord God, hear our prayers for Your servants who suffer in this earthly tent [especially _____________]. Do not let them lose heart, but fix their eyes beyond what is transient to the things unseen. By this slight momentary affliction, prepare them for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, when at last You will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with You into His presence. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
As Satan once overcame our first parents through the eating of the tree’s fruit, so overcome him now among us by the fruit of Your Son’s cross, His body and blood given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins. Bless all who commune with repentance and faith, that in the comfort of the Gospel they may be cleansed and prepared for eternal life with You. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
What was lost in Paradise has been regained by the conquering wounds of Your Son, crucified and raised again. In Him, we are restored as Your children and made bold to ask for every need. Hear us for His sake and in His name, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of the Church for June 9, 2024 — Ektene Form
In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the promised Offspring, Jesus Christ, whose death has crushed Satan’s head forever, let us give thanks to the Lord; and that as God received the meager confessions of our first parents for the sake of His grace, so He would forgive our sins and lead us forward in hope, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For the Church, her preachers, all servants who work, the generous who give and all who suffer with patience, that made brothers and fellow heirs of Christ Jesus by His incarnation and suffering for our sake, we may always do the will of God and so be true and faithful members of the household of God, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For courage, that as we believe, so we also would speak of the confidence of Christ’s resurrection; that we would be emboldened to confess this Christian faith from a lively conscience; and that, for Christ’s sake, grace may extend to more and more people for the glory of God, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For our nation and its government, that as no kingdom or house divided can ever stand, God would frustrate the destructive work of Satan and unite our leaders and our people for the common good, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
That God would lead us to place our true hope in His eternal kingdom, which is not of this world, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For all who suffer in this earthly tent, [especially _____________,] that fixing their eyes beyond the transient to things unseen, they would not lose heart; and that God, in His eternal wisdom, would prepare them through this slight momentary affliction for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, when at last we are raised with Christ and brought into His presence, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For all who commune, that as Satan once overcame our first parents through the eating of the tree’s fruit, so Christ would overcome the devil among us here by the fruit of His cross, His body and blood given and shed for us for the forgiveness of sins, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
What was lost in Paradise has been regained by the conquering wounds of Your Son, crucified and raised again. In Him, we are restored as Your children and made bold to ask for every need. Hear us for His sake and in His name, even Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Rise! To Arms! With Prayer Employ You — Historical TLH Edition
Historical text notice: This is the public-domain text of The Lutheran Hymnal 444, not the Lutheran Service Book 668 text. Wording and stanza form may differ.
1. Rise! To arms! With prayer employ you,
O Christians, lest the Foe destroy you,
For Satan has designed your fall.
Wield God’s Word, a weapon glorious!
Against each foe you’ll be victorious;
Our God will set you o’er them all.
Is Satan strong and fell?
Here is Immanuel.
Sing hosanna!
The strong ones yield,
With Christ our Shield,
And we as conqueror’s hold the field.
2. Cast afar this world’s vain pleasures,
Aye, boldly fight for heavenly treasures,
And steadfast be in Jesus’ might.
He will help, whate’er betide you,
And naught will harm with Christ beside you;
By faith you’ll conquer in the fight.
Then shame, thou weary soul!
Look forward to the goal:
There joy waits thee.
The race, then, run;
The combat done,
Thy crown of glory will be won.
3. Wisely fight, for time is fleeting,
The hours of grace are fast retreating;
Short, short, is this our earthly way.
Then the trump the dead is waking
And sinners all with fear are quaking,
With joy the saints will greet that Day.
Bless God, our triumph’s sure,
Tho’ long we did endure
Scorn and trial.
Thou, Son of God,
To Thine abode
Wilt lead the way Thyself hast trod.
4. Jesus, all Thy children cherish
And keep them that they never perish
Whom Thou hast purchased with Thy blood.
Let new life to us be given
That we may look to Thee in heaven
Whenever fearful is our mood.
Thy spirit on us pour
That we may love Thee more–
Hearts o’erflowing;
And then will we
Be true to Thee
In death and life eternally. Amen.
