St. Michael and All Angels
Three-Year Lectionary · Series B
About this service
Our Father in Heaven Protects His Children by Giving His Holy Angels Charge Over Them
We live in “a time of trouble” (Dan. 12:1), in the midst of great tribulation. Satan and his wicked angels have been thrown out of heaven and have come down to earth “in great wrath,” with woeful “temptations to sin” and with constant accusations (Rev. 12:8–12; Matt. 18:7). Even so, we are encouraged by the presence and protection of St. Michael and the holy angels, whom God sends to help us in the strife (Dan. 10:11–13). By “the authority of his Christ,” His holy angels guard and keep us in body and soul. These heavenly servants of God preserve His human messengers on earth, the ministers of “the blood of the Lamb,” against all the power of the enemy, for by “the word of their testimony,” the Church is saved and the devil is defeated (Rev. 12:10–11; Luke 10:18–19). By their preaching and Baptism of repentance, the old Adam and the old evil foe are “drowned in the depth of the sea” (Matt. 18:6). As God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, so are His people delivered and raised from the dust of the earth through the forgiveness of their sins (Dan. 12:1–3).

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for September 29, 2024 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Remember, Lord, Your Holy Church. May Your holy angels watch over her and guard her. Grant her peace and unity throughout the world. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Remember Matthew, our Synod president; _____________, our district president; and all pastors, teachers, deaconesses and servants of Your Church. Strengthen them in the true faith, and enable them to teach it well. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Remember our president, our public servants and all in our armed forces. Guide, bless, protect and uphold them in honor. Bring all nations into the ways of peace and justice. In Your kindness and love, grant us seasonable weather and an abundance of the fruits of the earth. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Remember all who suffer for Your name, all who are in prison, the hungry and ill-clad, the poor and the lonely, those who travel, and all who cry out to You in their time of need, especially all who have asked for our prayers [including _____________]. Grant that Your holy angel may be with them always, that the evil foe may have no power over them. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Father in heaven, Your Son instituted His Holy Supper for the forgiveness of our sins. Give us humble hearts to receive this blessed Sacrament with thanksgiving, and strengthen us through the same for our daily lives of faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Everlasting God, You have ordained and constituted the service of angels and men in a wonderful order. Mercifully grant that as Your holy angels always serve and worship You in heaven, so by Your appointment they may also help and defend us here on earth; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
