About this service
Christ Jesus Is the One and Only Good by Whom You Inherit Eternal Life
The Lord is the Author and Giver of life, as well as a consuming fire of judgment against all “who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate” (Amos 5:12). “Seek the Lord and live,” therefore, by hating what is evil, loving what is good and doing what is just and right, according to His Word. “And so the Lord, the God of hosts, will be with you” (Amos 5:6, 14–15). Understand that “no one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). The life that you are called to live is found neither in your “great possessions,” nor in your good works, but only in Christ Jesus. Let go of “all that you have” and follow Him, even unto death, and “you will have treasure in heaven” (Mark 10:21–22). Do not harden your heart against His voice, nor turn away from Him, lest you “fall away from the living God.” Rather, hear and heed His call, cling to His Word and “exhort one another every day,” that you may remain steadfast in Christ and “firm to the end” (Heb. 3:12–15).

Prayers of the Church
Prayers of the Church for October 13, 2024 — Responsive Form
Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Almighty and everlasting God, look with compassion on Your Church. Protect Your children from an evil, unbelieving heart that would lead us away from You into the deceitfulness of sin. By Your Spirit’s power, enable us to hold our original confidence firm to the end. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
O Lord, God of hosts, keep us from hating those You send to reprove us with Your law. Do not let us abhor those who speak Your truth to us, that we might repent and live. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Heavenly Father, Your Son warns us against the danger of trusting in wealth and earthly goods. Give us hearts that are content with His promises and hands that are generous with our worldly possessions. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Almighty God, in kindness remember the president of our country, our Congress and justices, and all who bear office in this land. Protect them from the temptations of power and wealth that would lead them away from their calling. Make their service a blessing to our land and its people. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
O Lord, have pity on [_____________ and] all Your servants afflicted in body or soul. Satisfy them with Your steadfast love in Christ, and grant health and healing in accord with Your perfect will. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Holy Lord, satisfy our longing hearts with Your steadfast love here in the feast of Christ’s body and blood, that we may rejoice and be glad in You all our days and into eternity. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
We give thanks to You, O Lord, for the faithful of every time and place who heard Your Word and held their confidence firm to the end. Keep us steadfast in the faith, that we may have our share with them in the eternal inheritance that You have promised; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayers of the Church for October 13, 2024 — Ektene Form
In peace, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For all the baptized, that the Lord would protect us from evil, unbelieving hearts that lead us away from Him into the deceitfulness of sin, thus enabling us, by the power of His Spirit, to hold our original confidence firm to the end, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For readiness to receive the Lord’s correction, that God would keep us from hating those He sends to reprove us with His law and from abhorring those who speak His truth to us, so that we may repent and live, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For generous hearts, that we would give God thanks for our earthly good and show compassion for our neighbors, freely giving from the blessings God has given to us, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For our president, Congress, justices and all who bear public office in this land, that the Lord would protect them from the temptations of power and wealth and make their service a blessing to the people, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For [_____________ and] all the Lord’s servants who are afflicted in body or soul, that God would satisfy them with His steadfast love in Christ and grant health and healing in accord with His perfect will, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
For all who commune, that God would satisfy our longing hearts with His steadfast love here in the feast of Christ’s body and blood, to rejoice and be glad in Him all our days and into eternity, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.
Amen.
